Descriptive Statistics: used to organize and describe the characteristics of a data set.

Inferential statistics: Usually the next step; used to make inferences about a possibly larger group of data, based on a smaller one.

  • The smaller group of data is often called a sample—a subset of a population.

Computing & Understanding Averages

Average: Value that best represents an entire group of scores.

Averages (measures of central tendency) come in 3 flavors:

  • Mean
  • Median
  • Mode
